Editorial Note: Buddhism and Science

This e-book is a compilation of research papers from an essay competition held to express gratitude to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The dual purpose of this competition was to honor His Holiness's profound contributions and to enhance the understanding and integration of Buddhist philosophy and modern science.

The scope of the competition covered a wide range of topics connecting scientific principles with Buddhist philosophy, including:

1. The dialogue, conflicts, and synthesis between Buddhism and Science.

2. The correlation between the Buddhist view of Dependent Origination and Quantum Physics.

3. Perspectives from both Buddhism and Science on the origin, nature, and value of life.

4. The roles and contributions of Buddhism and Science in alleviating suffering in a world impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and whether the coronavirus can be considered a living being.

Additionally, a separate category titled "Seeds of Compassion" was organized for young children.

Submissions & Highlights

A unique aspect of this competition was its inclusivity, welcoming submissions regardless of language or nationality. We received 85 specialized essays written in both Tibetan and English from participants spanning five different countries.

The final results were announced on a highly auspicious day (December 10, 2020), which marked a triple celebration: the 600th anniversary of Je Tsongkhapa’s parinirvana (Gaden Ngamchoe), the anniversary of His Holiness the Dalai Lama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and a special day of gratitude to His Holiness.

To preserve the authentic voice and unique style of each author, the editorial team has presented the essays in their original form without making major structural alterations. This e-book is published to satisfy the intellectual curiosity of readers from both East and West who are deeply interested in the intersection of Buddhism and Science.
